Tynemouth 2

     Tynemouth is a town and an historic borough in  Tyne & Wear, England. It has a fantastic Victorian train station and great old Priory. The beach is very popular and again long and vast with a strange pile of boulders in the middle. I like how you can see the great white Georgian houses running above the beach. Rock pools fasinate me. I love the deep shadows and reflections  in the shallow water. I wanted to capture the contrast between the dark wet rocks and the sun lit beach. 

The painting has been executed with oil paints on gessoed paper. This has become my latest technique with oil paints. I gesso a heavy printmaking paper to seal the surface. I then wash with turpentine and one colour over the surface, drawing with my brush and wiping away the highlights until I achieve the desired effect. I then lightly add more colour to achieve depth and contrast.
