Tynemouth is a town and an historic borough in Tyne & Wear, England. It has a fantastic Victorian train station and great old Priory. The beach is very popular and again long and vast with a strange pile of boulders in the middle. I like how you can see the great white Georgian houses running above the beach. I wanted to capture the feeling of the wind blowing the clouds and the Women’s scarves against the sun drenched beach. Saint Mary’s Church, a prominent landmark, towers above the calm beach below.
The painting has been executed with oil paints on gessoed paper. This has become my latest technique with oil paints. I gesso a heavy printmaking paper to seal the surface. I then wash with turpentine and one colour over the surface, drawing with my brush and wiping away the highlights until I achieve the desired effect. I then lightly add more colour to achieve depth and contrast.
