Hadrian’s Wall is an amazing piece of Roman engineering. Wanting to capture the sheer length of the Wall in a small space I pushed the composition into a square, using angles to give the Wall its depth. The area is covered with heather and the colour is just stunning.
The painting has been executed with oil paints on gessoed paper. This has become my latest technique with oil paints. I gesso a heavy printmaking paper to seal the surface. I then wash with turpentine and one colour over the surface, drawing with my brush and wiping away the highlights until I achieve the desired effect. I then lightly add more colour to achieve depth and contrast.
